Professional alternatives to the Patagonia vest

The Patagonia fleece vest earned its place as the finance uniform for a reason: it is warm, it is easy, and for a decade a firm would hand you one with its logo on it. That last part is over. Patagonia ended the corporate-logo program, and the vest itself, while still comfortable, now reads as "still dressing like the associate class." If you want the warmth without the uniform, here is what to look for and where to look.

Disclosure: I own Ritter and we make one of the vests below. I have tried to be fair to the others.

What made the Patagonia work, and what dates it

It works because it is a light, warm, zip-front layer that fits under an overcoat. It dates you because of three things: the fleece face, the logo, and the fact that everyone in the elevator has one. A good alternative keeps the first thing and drops the other three.

The five things a professional vest needs

  1. A knit or felted wool face instead of fleece. This is most of the "professional" effect.
  2. Low bulk so it sits flat under a blazer or overcoat.
  3. No visible logo.
  4. A short collar that sits below a shirt collar.
  5. Pockets that are hidden or zipped. Patch pockets turn it into a hunting vest.

Alternatives, honestly assessed

Merino zip vests from Brooks Brothers, Peter Millar, or Ralph Lauren. The safe choice. Smooth, thin, office-appropriate. Watch for pilling after the first winter on the cheaper ones, and check that the collar is short.

Boiled or felted wool vests. Warmer per ounce than a flat merino knit, with a matte face that looks like tailoring rather than knitwear. This is the category our Alpaca Rittervest sits in: alpaca and merino felted in Peru, hidden zip pockets, full zip, no logo. Alpaca pills less than merino because the fibre is stronger, and it does not itch.

Technical vests from Arc'teryx Veilance or similar. Sleek, but they are still synthetic and still read as gear. Fine for a startup, less so for a client meeting.

Lightly quilted vests. Matte, trim, dark ones can pass. Anything shiny or puffy cannot.

Quince and other value brands. Reasonable fleece and merino at low prices. You are trading longevity for the price; ask about pilling before you buy.

The test

Put the vest on over a dress shirt, put your blazer on over it, and look in the mirror. If the collar shows above the lapel, if the shoulders sit high, or if you can see a logo, it is the uniform again with a different label. If it disappears under the jacket and looks like a layer when the jacket comes off, you found it.
