Quiet luxury vests with no logos: what to look for

Short answer: a quiet luxury vest is knitted from natural fibre, cut flat at the shoulder, zipped in a colour that matches the knit, and carries no logo anywhere on the outside. Judge it by the fabric, the finish and the fit rather than by a name on the chest. Ours is the Alpaca Rittervest: alpaca and merino, felted smooth, plain front, no logo, $349.

I own Ritter. People ask me for "something like Loro Piana but not $1,500", and what they mean is a vest that looks expensive because it is quiet. This is how I would tell the real thing from the imitation, whoever you buy from.

What "quiet luxury" means in a vest

It means the garment does the talking and the label does not. Nobody across the table should be able to name the brand. They should notice that the vest sits right, the colour is deep rather than loud, and the fabric looks like it has a texture you want to touch.

Six things to check before you buy

  • No logo on the outside. No embroidered chest mark, no zip-pull badge the size of a coin, no contrast tape. If you can read it from across a room, it is not quiet.
  • Natural fibre you can see. Wool, alpaca, cashmere. Knitted or felted, with a matte surface. Anything that shines under office lights is a synthetic pretending.
  • A colour that sits close to the shirt under it. Charcoal, grey, cocoa, sand. The vest should look like it belongs to the outfit, not like a piece of kit worn on top.
  • Flat shoulders, no baffles. Quilting and puffed panels say outdoor gear. A knit vest lies against the body and sits under a blazer without a bulge.
  • A clean full-zip front and hidden pockets. Visible pocket flaps and toggles add clutter. Pockets that vanish keep the line plain.
  • It holds its shape. Cheap knits bag at the hem and stretch at the zip within a season. A felted knit keeps its shape for years.

How the usual choices stack up

Patagonia and North Face. Excellent at being warm outdoors, and almost always carrying a logo. A different job, and a different look.

Cashmere. Soft, and the obvious quiet-luxury answer. It usually costs more, and a fine knit needs more care than a felted one.

Designer houses. Beautiful, and priced accordingly. Part of what you pay for is the name, even when the name is hidden.

A plain wool vest from a small maker. This is the category we sit in: the fabric and the make of a good house, with no label on the front and a price under $350.

What is in ours

The Alpaca Rittervest is 34% alpaca, 33% merino and 33% nylon, made in small batches in Peru. The nylon is there so the zip, the pocket mouths and the edges survive years of use. It has a plain full-zip front, two hidden zip pockets at the hip, and no logo on the chest. It comes in eight colours, from Charcoal and Granite through Cocoa and Sandbar, in sizes S to XXXL. Shipping is free in the US, returns are free for 30 days and size exchanges are free for 30 days.

Questions I get asked

Is there any branding on the outside? No. There is no logo on the chest, the zip or the pockets.

Which colour is the quietest? Charcoal. Then Light Charcoal and Granite. Cocoa if you wear a lot of brown and navy.

Does it itch? No. Alpaca fibre carries no lanolin, the part of sheep's wool that irritates skin.

Can I wear it under a blazer? Yes. It sits flat at the shoulder; I wrote up what works under a blazer in detail.

Is it a good gift? It is the one people buy for a man who already owns the fleece and the puffy one. Gifts for the dad who wears vests covers sizing and what to check before you buy.

If you want the one I make, the Alpaca Rittervest is the plain one, and I answer the emails myself.
